Texas LEAD Calendar

Texas LEAD will be hosting weekly group discussions with interns. You can view the calendar by clicking on the image.

As PPS welcomes and coordinates their own professional development, we will use this topical outline as we curate our own activities and collaborative efforts among the interns. We are sharing this with you, our Mentors, as an additional opportunity for you to incorporate these topics into their daily work and engage in professional discussions. These topics will be fresh in the interns' minds, so we encourage you to find a moment to explore how they can apply these insights to their professional growth.

For reference, there are certain types of applicants which can apply for the UT Summer Internship.

  • Graduate Students: Only undergraduate students are eligible for this program. We will be checking all applications and making sure that folks are graduate students. However, if we happen to miss one, please know that only undergraduates are eligible to be chosen.
  • Graduating Seniors: Students are eligible for the program as long as they were enrolled for Spring 2024. Which means that current UT students who will graduate in May are eligible, but incoming freshman who will enroll for Fall 2024 are not eligible.
  • Duplicates: We are aware some students have duplicate applications. Please consider their most complete application if one is missing documents.
Interviewing
As of February 19th, you can be begin interviewing applicants!

March 15-Deadline to indicate your top three candidates in the supervisor portal

March 20- Texas LEAD will begin making offers to students. NO OFFERS CAN BE MADE BEFORE THIS BESIDES SOFT OFFERS TO LET STUDENTS KNOW YOU ARE INTERESTED

Interview Question ExamplesYou are welcome to write your own questions for these interviews, but we have attached a few sample ones as well.

As a reminder TexasLEAD recommends asking about or sharing the following information with interns:

  • Remote Work: Be sure the interviewee knows there are 1-hour weekly in-person workshops. Tell the candidate whether the remaining 18hrs/wk will be in-person, remote, or hybrid
  • Travel Plans: Make sure the student will miss no more than 2 weeks of the internship time. If they will miss more, you will need to communicate that with Texas LEAD.
  • Commitments: Make sure the student will not be over 40 hours between the 19 hours a week for the internship, other UT paid positions, and classes.
  • Interview Structure: You are welcome to create your own structure, but we have some suggestions below.
    • Rounds: We recommend one round of interviews with 6-8 questions. YOU MUST INTERVIEW AT LEAST THREE CANDIDATES, but may choose to interview more.
    • Time: We recommend 30 minute interviews.
    • Virtual: Zoom interviews are our suggested mode of interviewing candidates.
    • Panel: We recommend having at least one other person present during interviews, so that you have another person to discuss with when deciding on your intern.

Be Aware of Bias: Maintaining an unbiased attitude during interviews is crucial. Recognizing biases can be challenging, so we ask that you all make it a priority to look through these anti-bias guidelines. Feel free to review this interview resource as well before proceeding with the interviews.

Basic Information About Internship Positions (Pay, Dates, Housing)
  • Pay: $15 an hour for 19 hours a week
  • Dates: May 20, 2024-July 26, 2024
  • Housing Assistance: We will have the housing assistance application open once students have been hired. They can receive up to $2000 to use on on or off-campus housing. They will receive these funds through their hourly pay, not in a lump sum.
  • In-person workshops required on-campus each week.
Extending Soft Offers

You may make a soft offer but cannot require students to say yes or no. Texas LEAD will be making official offers after the interview period ends on March 15.
